Analysis Of The Book The Cold Nights - 1221 Words

The page was crammed with writing, a sea of chaotic words; each letter dancing back and forth to find its place. The sentences were arranged in an unintelligent disarray. Berserk symbols were drawn hastily over the crumpled paper. 4:13am. The light had gone out of my life. The night came mumbling sweet nothings, luring energy from her already weakened muscles. There was no trace of warmth left, nothing of the summer or the alluring kiss of the vanquished sun. The hours promised to pass slowly. The cold nights were infact the longest, or so it felt that way. Every night was a delusive scuffle of conflicting thoughts. Twelve o clock morphed into one and then two and then three. The time ticked by, marked only by those changing numerals.†¦show more content†¦Life was caving in on her. Her head was too delirious. Each thought bounced around inside her skull like a disoriented swarm of bees. Now and then they stung. Must be hornets, not bees. Bees died after one sting. And the same thoughts were stinging her again and again. It was winter. A colder, more frigid winter I do not think there ever was in the small town of Montana. We were embraced with happiness; the branches of the tree formed an arch with the weight of the snow, leaves crisped from the frost. I remember that winter so well, certainly because the season was so little in tune with our thoughts. Allison and I, poked at the hershey kisses and soft marshmallows, watching them melt into the hot chocolate. It s too cold to play hide-n-seek- Boo, she quivered. Letting a little giggle escape from my mouth, I insisted on still playing. In the past she and I had often played, hiding from each other; yet when we found each other once more, it was a fit of laughter. That day, however, all was changed. It took me a long while to discover Allison. She had hidden herself in the depths of a dark cupboard, in the shed with a fallen roof slate. On the satellite images the hurricane had looked beautiful, a perfect swirl of white no more threatening than cream stirred into coffee. No one had given it much attention, or more so, they had secretly prayed for it to turn away. But instead, it left our town like twisted metal. People cried.

Breaking Night A Memoir Of Forgiveness, Survival, And...

Liz Murray Research Report One of the most inspiring, amazing, and smart people that I know of is Liz Murray. Liz’s parents were desperate drug addicts. They were unemployed so any money that they did get, was mostly used for drugs. This caused more hardships in Liz’s and her sister, Lisa’s life. Since most of the money they had went to drugs, Liz and her family were practically very poor. Liz wasn’t motivated to go to school. She felt embarrassed and didn’t want to be seen, because of her dirty appearance. However, there was something special about Liz. She wouldn’t go to school for days on end, and then pass all her tests. Eventually, Liz decided that she wanted to become a real student. She went to high school and passed with flying†¦show more content†¦Ã¢â‚¬Å"Murray was the only member of the family who had a job. At age 9, she started bagging groceries and pumping gas.† (Adult Student) This may be one of the reasons that they were practically homele ss. Liz Murray really did have a very difficult childhood. Things were very bad for Liz, until one day, she decided to shape up. A website about Liz Murray talks about when she decided to go to highschool. â€Å"She had nowhere to live and had not attended school regularly for years, but at 17 pledged to become a straight A student and complete her high school education in just two years.† (Guardian News) I think that this is just the beginning of Liz’s road to Harvard. It talks about how she got to highschool, in a website about Liz. It says, â€Å"Although many high schools denied her entrance because she was truant, in 1997 Murray enrolled at the Humanities Preparatory School, a new progressive public school in downtown Manhattan.† (The Harvard Crimson) Liz went to high school, and blossomed. She was a â€Å"straight A† student and at the top of her class. However, things weren’t so perfect at home. In that amount of time, Liz’s mother died of aids, and her father left Liz and Lisa, her sister. T hey had been staying with their uncle at the time. However, their uncle was abusive to them so Miller 3 while Lisa stayed, Liz went out on her own a couple of nights at a time. She even talks about it in her book. â€Å"After a few weeks of being so dependant on people, I began sleeping a few

These areas will consist of the documentation style, plagiarism, college writing aspects covered by PAP style, the concepts of academic honesty, and how PAP style applies to all. Documentation style is a standard method used to create citations for sources that the author of a paper has consulted, abstracted, or quoted from (Wisconsin-Madison, 201 1). Although many documentation styles exist, there are only three styles that are most often used in college writing. Such styles are: Modern Language Association (MEAL), American Psychological Association (PAP), and Chicago Manual Style (CSS).However, the most often style required in college writing is that of PAP (Ryan, 2011). Using documentation style is, in my opinion, of major significance in college writing, because in doing so your paper appears more professional, your paper is well-organized, allows your reader(s) to more efficiently find the sources for information they find of interest, and of most significance of all, it also requires you as the student to give credit to the author of the source of information they had used. Using PAP style in college writing allows many aspects to be covered, but feel the most important aspect covered is the formatting of the reference list. Formatting the reference list using PAP style ensures the author who wrote the source you are referencing that they will receive the appropriate credit due for their contributions (Ryan, 201 1).Other aspects covered by PAP style in college writing is the heading, he organization, the professionalism appearance of the writing, the ease of which reader(s) have in finding information that may be of interest to them, and amongst all it protects you from plagiarism. In most colleges and universities alike, plagiarism is intolerable that can and will come with a costly price if found. Plagiarism is essentially when you use information you had obtained from another person without having permission for or have not given the proper credit that person is entitled to (University, 2002).This is something all students should avoid at all costs. Simply just by making sure that their sources receive the credit for which they are due, the student will not only build their credibility as a writer, b ut will also maintain academic honesty at the same time. Now this is a goal I believe all students desire, and by following PAP formatting it will help you accomplish just that. I look at it this way, academic honesty is something a student starts with; however, it IS maintaining that academic honesty that requires all the work.
